Research

Dr. Bridges is now retired and is not taking new students.

In the past, Bridges' research group undertook experimental investigations and supporting theoretical studies of microwave, millimeter-wave and optical devices and systems. Emphasis was placed on demonstrations of new devices and techniques for applications in communications and radar technology, with an understanding of their physical operating principles. Particularly, we were concerned with the performance limitations in microwave and millimeter-wave analog photonic links for signal transmission, antenna remoting, and phased-array radar systems. Novel electro-optic modulators using radiation coupling were conceived to extend operation to the 100 GHz range. Various methods of linearizing electro-optic modulation were studied to achieve very high dynamic range operation for photonic links.

Earlier group studies included gas laser research, particularly carbod-dioxide waveguide lasers, sub-millimeter gas lasers, ion laser spectroscopy, dielectric waveguides, and laser isotope separation.
